About this Gateway
Welcome to the FAIR Process Framework. It was produced through the collaborative work of CABI’s Enabling Data Access project.

The FAIR Process Framework is a website designed to enable funders and grantees to apply the FAIR principles to agricultural development investments. It was co-developed with Programme Officers from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, grantees, in-country partners, and a wider network of stakeholders working with the CABI team.

Six-step framework
As part of the process, a six-step framework was designed to offer manageable, practical activities that help you and your team implement a FAIR and responsible data strategy from concept through execution. The steps are:

Step 1: DiscoveryDefining data intervention types
Lay the groundwork for a sustainable, data-driven project, define and document problems, goals, activities, challenges and solutions that enable FAIR data practices.

Step 2:  Understanding Assessing the enabling environment
Understand the ecosystem affecting your investment, identify personas, map value exchanges, and analyze influencing factors, enabling clearer relationships and impactful FAIR data practices.

Step 3: Planning Identifying data assets
Manage data assets effectively, create an inventory to clarify data types, ownership, and future use, supporting data sharing and long-term impact.

Step 4: Co-developing Setting FAIR aligning principles
Develop a shared FAIR goal, build awareness, trust, and alignment, assess FAIR commitment levels, and make sustainable, informed resourcing decisions, for collaboration and buy-in.

Step 5: StrategyDeveloping a FAIR data strategy
Develop a considered strategy that will increase the likelihood of successfully implementing FAIR principles.

Step 6: ImplementingActivating FAIR implementation
Explore, analyze and assess technical processes and choices that enhance FAIR implementation.

This Gateway includes supporting documents for the framework for sustainable national soil information systems that draws on the FAIR Process Framework.

You can also access tools from the earlier education resource, the Data Sharing Toolkit, via the Archive gateway area.

Gateway Areas
This module will help you to make the grant process smoother and the results more impactful by detailing what is needed for integrating 'FAIR and safeguarded' data within an investment.
This module will help you to ensure that investments are well scoped with respect to the enabling environment.
This module will help you to understand barriers and techniques to address reusing data from existing third party sources.
This module will help you to understand personal data and techniques that can be applied to ensure investments protect the rights of individuals while maximising the utility of data.
This module will help you to understand and use data sharing agreements and data licences that maximize findability, reusability and safeguarding of data.
This module will help you to understand the building blocks of risk, how to analyse them and take steps to minimise harmful impacts.
This module will help you to identify and propose opportunities to make investment data sustainable, by ensuring that the investment includes clear plans for making sure the data is still stored, well maintained, and access or licensing permissions are given to the relevant people to use the data even after the grant is complete.
This area is for documents that were created as part of the Enabling Data Access project, but are not part of the toolkit.
This area contains documents created as part of the SIS Review project, some of which support specific activities in the framework for sustainable national soil information systems.
These case studies and reports are examples of investment projects where CABI and other partners contributed to FAIR and responsible data practices. They include examples that underpin the structure of this resource, and examples where steps and activities from this resource were tried and tested.

This archive contains seven eLearning modules with supporting case studies, checklists, cheat sheets and guides. All the modules help demystify how to use, collect and share FAIR and safeguarded data for you, and, for the people in agriculture you wish to empower.
