The World Health Organisation (WHO) is developing the 2030 goals for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including diseases outside of the London Declaration that have not received priority interventions and donations previously. Setting the targets and goals and charting the roadmap are challenging, and they need to take into account multiple perspectives and stakeholders. However, the targets are quantitative, and transmission dynamic models and quantitative analyses provide critical evidence to inform policy decisions.
In this collection, a large network of infectious diseases modellers, clustered around the NTD Modelling Consortium, provides insights on the achievability, measurability, feasibility, and timeline of the proposed goals for NTDs. These are informed opinions, based on their experience, expertise, and the existing literature on quantitative analysis and modelling. The authors identify challenges and key unknowns for the programmes, as well as highlighting areas of likely success.
