About this Collection
The World Health Organization Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing (WHO/MCA) is coordinating a multi-country implementation research study to understand how to scale up immediate kangaroo mother care (iKMC) in facilities with a newborn care unit (Level II health facilities) across four countries: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and India.

Integrating iKMC into the care of small, sick newborns within existing health systems presents significant challenges, especially in resource-limited settings where infrastructure, workforce capacity, and the availability of human resources may be inadequate. This research seeks to develop context-specific models that achieve high coverage and quality care and then facilitate the widespread adoption of iKMC in each context.

The findings from this study will inform policy development and service delivery to guide countries in the resources, equipment, processes and interventions for different contexts to effectively integrate iKMC into routine neonatal care.

This collection will consolidate publications and findings from the different phases of the iKMC research including the study protocol, formative research, model development, and the scale-up of iKMC in the four study countries. The collection will include papers that highlight key steps in the implementation process, offering valuable insights for programme planners and policymakers to guide the successful uptake and expansion of iKMC in their own regions. The goal is to ensure high coverage of quality services, ultimately contributing to the strengthening of care for small, sick newborns and saving lives.
